Finicky standards? I mean, hell, if I was to glue myself to the TV watching somebody sing, then it had better be awesome. Fortunately, Daniel’s delivery of “Angin Malam” saved the show for me. That’s saying a lot since I am not a fan of Daniel.

Notice that I have not been posting much over in this blog since the end of the show? Well, I have discovered that there is indeed life after death. Look, if your life has not rebooted since the end of the show, then maybe you may want to do something drastic.

Or you could head over to my main blog and read more educational shit. He got 68% of the votes I think(1.2 million votes). The teenybopper brigade of girls were passionate in their support. I know I called him Baby-faced Elf, and Giraffe Genes called him the “King of Falsetto”, but the under-fifteen girls love him. The total number of votes this year for the WHOLE season has increased from 5 million to 6 million votes.

For the Results show, I liked the outfit that Cheryl wore…low cut jeans with a white shirt. Kak Jee wore something that totally defies decent description. I remember that my mum used to do patchwork with coloured pieces of unwanted cloth cuttings. The result was a multicoloured item similar to what Kak Jee wore. I’m going to have to ask mum if she gave that indescribable piece to any singing judge lately.

Did you see Trish come out to sing a number and then her blouse sort of slipped over her left shoulder and she had to quickly yank it back in place before her left tit fell out? The shocked expression on her face was priceless!

Whatever Daniel does after this, I hope he does not record “Mimpi”. That song should be shelved and forgotten like a bad memory. You people heard the song and you know what I mean.

I made a bet with Hot Babe. She said that Nita would win and I betted on Daniel. The winner gets a lunch from the loser tomorrow. Muahahahah! I gotta find a good and expensive place to eat tomorrow! Yeah! But knowing Hot Babe, she would want me to spend her a movie later. I should have betted BOTH lunch and movie.

Cannot decide betul

It’s 7:30 p.m. and I’m still undecided whom to vote for. If you have been following my postings, you would know that I was a Farah supporter. I had been only lukewarm to both Nita and Daniel for the last two months. During last night’s finals, neither Daniel nor Nita blew away each other to allow me to make an easy decision.

A number of you people implied that the song “Mimpi” sucked. It sucked big time ass! Tuneless and unworthy, that’s what I think. My vacuum cleaner sucks too, but at least its ten times more tuneful. The composers must have been doing a rushed job. What I want to know is whether the composers were appointed only at the very last moment only.

I’m going to have to remove hate comments from the comment board. Even those that sound remotely hateful. And also anonymous comments. Hey! Everybody has to use a nick, okay? Otherwise it gets really confusing. So please don’t give me more work that I wish to do. Not on a weekend.

I turned to both TV3 and 8TV yesterday to compare broadcasts. The broadcast over TV3 was much louder than on 8TV. Don’t know why Paul was making such a big fuss over the cameraman and Daniel. Everything looked okay on my 29 inch TV. Kak Jee had to persuade Paul to return to serious business. Whoever loses this one will still get a recording contract. Is it my imagination, or are last year’s contestants Jamil and Rydee an item now? They appeared together lurvy durvy last night.

Back to Daniel and Nita. I still can’t decide. Well, maybe not to decide is to decide.

Malaysian Idol 2 - Finals in Genting

It was nice to see the voted-out contestants tonight singing a medley of songs. Xerra did not have her red hair anymore and I almost did not recognise her.

Now for the singing of top two finalists, Daniel and Nita. One short one tall. One girl one boy. Different styles. But both from Penang.

Daniel started singing first. I was not impressed by his first song, “Mimpi”, the Malaysian Idol song for this year. To be fair, I think that the song was definitely not as impressively composed as “Gemilang”, last year. It definitely won’t sell, no matter who sang it.

The second song, his own choice, was “Heaven knows”. It was good. He brought his falsetto notes out into play effectively.

The third song, “Angin Malam”, was to my mind, the best song of the night. It was beautifully delivered in his own style.

Nita started out with a song picked out for her by the jury. It was nothing spectacular.

Her second song, “Big Spender” was her best song for the night. However, I think that her Spectaculars version was better than tonight.

Nita’s version of “Mimpi” was ordinary. It was better than Daniel’s rendition of the same song, but did not bring the house down. Frankly, I think that this newly composed song “Mimpi’ was a lost cause. Even Jac wouldn’t be able to do anything for it.

The judges tonight were in “diplomatic” mode. They did not make any unflattering remarks about the singing. Maybe it was the party atmosphere, and they did not want to dampen the spirit.

Who did better? I think both were not all that spectacular, but Daniel has a slight edge. His song “Angin Malam” was better than Nita’s “Big Spender”. Nita needed a spectacular performance to pick up the loose votes to overcome Daniel’s fan base, but she did not deliver enough. Compare that to Jac last year after her rendition of Gemilang and the crowd gave her a standing ovation.

The camera interviewed both Nita and Daniel’s fans. Nita’s fans were mostly male and Daniel’s fans were mostly female. This is the huge difference. Male fans will vote up to their budgeted limit. Female fans will also vote to their limit, then after that, they will borrow their boyfriends’ phones to vote as well. Which is why I think that Daniel will win.

Spectaculars 8 - Results

On Sunday, when Daniel, Farah and Nita stood there, I noticed one thing; none of the three had black hair.

The judges were asked about their predictions.

Roslan and Kak Jee predictied that Daniel would be out.

Paul predicted that Farah would be out.

Only Paul was accurate.

Roslan and Kak Jee have been wrong so many times in the past that I wonder if they are in touch with the music audience. Daniel took the highest number of votes, leaving Nita and Farah to fight it out. When the results were announced, Farah lost, but did not seemed too upset.

Oh, this time there was no voting preview. I wonder why.

Farah has a better chance of finding commercial CD success than Nita later. Her voice quality is better and her pitching problems are not so pronounced. If she were to record in a studio, most of the other faults can be ironed out. But she does have a sort of dumb bimbo look. And unlike Nita, she does not do so well on stage.

Why does Daniel have so many votes? Simple. Each time the judges, especially Roslan, said something unflattering about Daniel, the people voted for him in reaction. It’s like they are voting against Roslan. Daniel’s rendition of Oooo Lah Lah last Friday wasn’t bad. It looked very spontaneous and it reminded me of Dina’s “Hit Em Up Style” last year. It was thus a surprise to me that he attracted that kind of bad comments from the judges. And of course, the listeners rebelled and voted for Baby faced Elf.

I did not vote last week because I could not decide among those three. The situation this year was not like last year when Jac was a clear winner halfway in the competition.

Who will win in Genting? I think Daniel has more fans than Nita. But Farah’s fans are more likely to migrate to Nita than Daniel. It’s going to be a tough call.

Malaysian Idol 2 - Spectaculars 8

"Songs from the movies".....that was the theme of the night.

The guest judge was Macik Warong Ogy, also known as Fauziah Ahmad Daud. She can talk a lot without really saying anything. You know how Kak Jee likes to parrot what Abang Roslan says? Well, Macik Warong Ogy likes to parrot what both Abang Roslan and Kak Jee said. That makes her a super parrot. The producers should give us guest judges who talk good sense, or at least look good.

Enough about the judges.

Jien made a lame joke about how Paul's favourite movie is the Titanic. Yup, Jien is still not out of the Paul fetish yet. He needs a new shrink.

So let's see what Daniel, Nita, and Farah came up with.

Daniel: The first song "Ooh! La! La!" was quite fun to listen to. Very boy band like. Nothing that fantastic in the vocals department, but he had fun. Daniel has that ability to rock on stage and make everything fun. The second song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" was a disaster. His voice just does not suit that kind of song. I would call that the worst performance for the night.

Nita: The first song "Love is a crime" was well done. I would rate that the best performance for the evening. The second song "Asmaradana" was normal, not entirely boring, but simply not outstanding. Nita does not shine with Malay songs.

Farah: I don't know the title of her first song, but it was an Ogy song, and was definitely a bad song choice for her. It sounded school girlish. The second song "All By Myself" wasn't bad, and I liked it. It showed off her vocals as easily the best among the three contestants. The performance was not as soulful as I would have liked, but of course, her young age was a factor.

I can't decide whom to vote for in this round. Many weeks ago, I said that Nita had the best chance of winning and that only Farah could challenge her. I had not expected Daniel to come this far. But Daniel is able to CONNECT with the most important group of people, that is, girls under the age of twenty with their own cell phone. As far as the music industry is concerned, teenagers are the VIPs. They are the ones who think nothing about buying a new original CD using their parents’ money. If you are not a teenager, then you definitely are persona non grata. Sorry, but that's how it works.

If there is another shitty voting preview again this Sunday, then definitely I will not bother to shift my ass to vote in the Genting finals. Those of you visiting the forums can quote me on this one.

Here it is again

“If there is another shitty voting preview again this Sunday, then definitely I will not bother to shift my ass to vote in the Genting finals.”

That stooopid preview of voting results

Last Sunday, the Malaysian Idol producers gave us a sneak preview of the bottom two in the results. And then they announced that we could still change the results. That, to me is clearly unethical.

I can only think of two theories why they would do such a thing.

The first theory was that Nita was at the bottom of the pack, and they did it to shake things up a bit to prevent Nita from getting booted out. That would imply favouritism. Is favouritism unethical for the producers? You tell me!

The second theory is that there was no favouritism and they did not much care who the fuck got booted out. But the revenue from SMSes were way below target. So they showed us the bottom two group of Nita and Faizull in the avaricious hope that it will spur their fans to send in some last minute voting to boost the coffers. That's not unethical, is that?

Whoa, hold on. Last minute voting is not an easy thing to do. The phone facilities may not be in the same shitty best for all parts of the country. If Faizull's fans in the Felda estates have to queue up in one zinc-roofed house with a working phone to vote, they will not be able to alter the results very much in the last few minutes. Nita's fans in Penang would be able to send in their votes faster than Faizull could change his underwear. You think that this is still ethical? It's more like downright despicable.

Whichever theory is true, it would still be ethically questionable to provide viewers with a preview of the voting results.

Malaysian Idol producers are in serious need of a good therapist. They have got their brains so badly screwed up that I wonder how long they have been eating shit and shitting rice.

Good grief, we know that a little greed is good. Greed keeps our economy humming. But we NEED NOT BE THAT DESPERATE! They're acting like drowning asses grasping anything that will float. There is NO FUCKING NEED to give us a preview of the voting results! If the show is floundering, and we know it is, then find some other way to rescue it!

If they carry on with this stupid preview thingy, then the more calculative ones, will just wait for the voting preview before voting.
And others, will be so pissed off that they might just stop voting altogether.

Can the show still remain viable after that?

NOTHING TURNS PEOPLE OFF LIKE DESPERATION!

Spectaculars 7 - Results

Yeah, Faizull's out.

That was not the surprise.

What surprised me was that Malaysian Idol producers allowed viewers to know that Nita and Faizull were at the bottom two and then challenged the voters to try to change the results. Now he was really giving good comments, and not trying to appear to be polite. Kak Jee looked stunning, seated among 3 guys.

All the finalists sang in both English and Bahasa except Faizull. He’s appearing more and more one-dimensional day by day.

Daniel:
I didn’t think his performance today was that great. The same problems of diction were still there. However, he always comes to the stage as if he is having fun. Like boy band material. Awie told him to “buka mulut”. This guest judge does not mince words, does he?

Farah:
Tonight was not great for her. She’s having an off-day so close to the final stretch. Great voice but it’s like her confidence has taken a shaking. Paul even said, “I think it’ too late for you.” Farah is inconsistent in her performance within the same song. Some parts are promising, some parts are a letdown. I hope she makes it through this round.

Faizull:
Two words; “screechy” and “scratchy”. This guy is clearly a niche singer. Meaning Bahasa rock only. Like Paul said, he is in danger of becoming a national joke. Mercifully, tonight he did not try to sing in English. One-dimensional screecher, that’s him.

Nita:
For the first time, her song in Bahasa was good. The English song(‘Hand in my pocket’) was safe, ordinary and boring. It does look like she’s staying the course. Her biggest problem will be to try to sing in tune. Kak Jee said, “You’re back.”

Frankly, I think this is a pretty weak field. Farah and Nita are not even in the same league as Nikki of last season. I won’t compare Daniel and Faizull to last year’s guys because last year’s guys were not that hot either.

But that’s not the point. If we are interested in taking part in the voting, then we will have to choose among the four. If we do not take part in the voting, and then we gripe about how other people voted, that would be really really pathetic.

Sure, voting costs money. But this is a business. Buying CDs also costs money. The logic behind the multiple voting system is that the fan who is ready to spend good money on voting is also the type to spend on CDs. A one-man one-vote democratic system will kill the business. This isn’t about catering to the rights of the common man. It’s about catering to the rights of the people who can spend, geddit? This is a business first and last. It’s a tough world. And then you die. The system has its drawbacks, but it generally works.

Feeling kinda sorry

I feel kinda sorry for us all.

The Malaysian Idol competition is down to the last four and we are nowhere near the standard of last year. So I guess that her period, or whatever that was troubling her, had disappeared. It's all very mysterious. She looked kind of girlish and radiant tonight. Maybe it’s the hairstyle.

What did the judges thought of Friday’s performance?

Roslan liked Daniel’s malay song. Personally, I think that one is good enough to be recorded. Kak Jee liked Nita’s “Hey Big Spender”. And Paul liked both second songs of Daniel and Nita.

Then the judges gave their predictions.

Roslan felt that Faizull should be out this round because the competition was doing him more harm than good. Faizull has not been able to improve on his versatility so far, being able to handle only malay rock. Compare that with rocker Bo Bice or Constantine of American Idol who had much wider ranges.

Kak Jee thought that it would be either Faizull or Ash.

Paul was worried for Farah, because even if she sang okay, she would still be in the bottom group.

Jien and Cheryl announced the results. The two top vote-getters were Giraffe Genes and Baby-faced Elf. Ah, finally Malaysians voted based on performance!

The bottom three were Farah(as usual), Ash and Fat Kampung Rocker.

Farah was then told that she was safe. She seemed a bit lost after the announcement. She said something to Ash, and shook his hand. Maybe she sensed that Ash would be going off the show. It took her awhile to join Daniel and Nita on the bench.

Ash and Fat Kampung Rocker stood together arm in arm. Both of them had been rather chummy throughout the whole competition. Just like Adam was chummy with Nita.

And leaving us after this round is……….Ash.

My kungfu novel

This is a short notification to those of you who are interested in reading a kungfu story in English. I have just written the first episode ot the "Twin Dragons of Li Daifu". This short novel(roughly 10 episodes) should be interesting enough and full of wuxia action. I wouldn't post it up if it is unable to match the standards of a few of the English translated wuxia fiction available on the web.

But you be the judge. And tell me what you think.

Here is the story link.

Malaysian Idol 2 – Spectaculars 6

Tonight, the theme was classic songs. Each contestant had to sing two songs, one in English and one in Bahasa. And the guest judge is Sharifah Aini. Kak Jee was absent because she was not feeling well, we were told. Is it that awkward time of the month already?

Okay, the first song.

Faizull came on and sang, “I feel good”. It was a disaster. I heard, “I feel nai, sugar and spy.” Instead of “I feel nice, sugar and spice”.
Roslan: “Can sing malay rock only. Lain hancur”
Sharifah: “I think you’re good.”
Paul: “Like a robot singing. Didn’t work.”

Farah came next and sang Getaran Jiwa. It was like she sang it withut warming up her voice.
Roslan: “Tiada keistimewaan.”
Sharifah: “Concentrate on pitching.”
Paul: “Pitchy, unconvincing”

Daniel sang Save The Last Dance for me. Teruk nya. I didn’t hear the words he was singing. But he has a great stage personality.
Roslan: “Saya suka.”
Sharifah: “Overall you did well.”
Paul: “That song is way too old for you.”

Nitya came next. She sang okay, but it was boring. I almost slept.
Roslan: “Disappointed”
Sharifah: Can’t remember what she said. But she’s seldom critical.
Paul: “Boring, pitchy, insipid.”

Ash sang an English song which I have not heard before. I think it worked for him.
Roslan: “You have improved”
Sharifah: “You impressed me”
Paul: “Didn’t work.”

After that, the contestants presented their second song.

Faizull sang a malay classic. I didn’t think he nailed it as his voice is not suitable for classis. But it was better than his first song.
Roslan: No comments
Sharifah: “Good try”
Paul: “Vocals lack intensity.”

Farah sang “Ain’t no mountain high enough.” It was good. She has the best voice o the whole bunch with clear diction.
Roslan: “Bagus”
Sharifah: “Use the stage well”
Paul: “You’re too young, too sweet, too nice for that song.”
Daniel sang a malay song next, which I thought was a lot better than his first song. He does better with malay songs than english songs.
Roslan: “Saya suka.”
Sharifah: “Very good.”
Paul: “That was beautiful”

Nita sang “Hey big spender”. It was good but lacked the great power in the vocals to be able to carry it off as a cabaret singer.
Roslan: “Muka cantik, badan cantik, nyanyi cantik”
Beats me how that botak blind bat can call it ‘badan cantik’ when her figure is straight like a pencil. Every week I try to spot where her tits are with great effort.
Sharifah: “Fantastic”
Paul: “I loved that.”

Ash sang a malay song next and it sounded mechanical to me. It was like he did not understand what he was singing.
Roslan: “Awful”
Sharifah: “You must know that singing is about conviction”
Paul: “While you were singing, the audience was talking.”

Spectacular 5 - results

The judges were asked on their opinion on last Friday's rock performance.

Paul said that "Ash was half-good, Farah was okay, and Daniel was Daniel. The rest was a flop."
Amazing! Same conclusion as what I blogged. But I get nervous when Paul agrees with my observations. It makes me doubt the independance of my thinking.

Predictions....who will be out?

Roslan: "Adam or Nita."
Kak Jee: "Adam, Nita or Ash."
Paul: "It's gotta be Adam or Nita."

The six cointestants were divided into two groups; the feminine group of Adam, Nita and Farah, and the masculine group of Ash, Baby-faced Elf Daniel and Fat Kampung Rocker. How do you like that, voting by sexual characteristics? The most idiotic way to vote, if you ask me.

And the voters have decided that the bottom three would be the feminine group.

Farah was called to step forward. You could see the air expelling from her lungs when it was announced that she was safe.

Leaving us tonight is......Adam.

Adam was tearful. It does not matter who leaves, he would still have cried. He broke down a bit as he thanked the judges for their comments.

So now that leaves five.

Malaysian Idols 2 – Spectaculars 5

This time, the theme is ‘rock’ songs. This is theme that Malaysian singers don’t seem to do well. Last year, during Malaysian Idol 1, all the singers did teruk, except for Jac. None of them have the raw edge in the voice to carry it off well. This year was not much different. I’m going to ignore most of the judges’ comments this time.

Farah: Luv her hairstyle. And her voice. But she was not convincing as a rock singer.

Adam: I dunno what it sounded like, but no, it did not sound like rock. It was just indescribable.

Nita: She came out looking like somebody from the “Matrix” movie. Didn’t move or sound like a rock singer. She has not improved at all despite all the singing and music coaches. I think she is set in her style already.
Paul said, “It is never a good idea to sing in a different key from the band. You’re in big trouble this week.”

Daniel: It was a watered down rock song. Much like a teeny-bopper version. There was no angst. As usual the girls will go goo goo ga ga over him.

Ash: Pitchy. But he was at least semi-convincing as a rock singer. However, the raw emotion was not quite there.

Faizull: He looked like some Fat Apache Red Indian Squaw from the Oonga Woonga reservation. He had the sound and style of rock. But it was odd to hear him sing in English. Faizull suffers from a kampung image. So he had to sing an English song to break out of the mold. Sadly, it did not work. Beyond the words “Not tonight” I couldn’t hear anything else. Shall I vote for him? Not tonight, darling, I got a headache.

My voting this week is not based on the singing, for the obvious disappointing reasons. It will be based on looks. Yep, giving them to Farah again.

*Sunday afternoon update*
I caught the repeat show over TV3 on Sunday. I know, I know, I ought to get a life, but I had to be home because of something so I thought I may as well watch the repeat.

My conclusions? The best two performers were Farah and Ash(surprise surprise!) The worst was Adam, Nita and Faizull. Adam had a bad flat song choice and is definitely out of his depth in rock. Faizull can't pronounce English words and should stick to Malay songs. Nita had peaked and could not improve any further. Weeks ago I had expected Nita to be the front runner. But she is looking vulnerable now and losing voice control. Daniel as usual, I dunno what he was singing, but at least his effort was not as bad as the rest. Ash surprised me this round by giving an 'okay' rendition.

Farah sang a dfficult Alanis Morisette song, was the first singer, and pulled it off without too many errors except for the body motions. Yep, she deserves my votes this week.

Spectaculars 4 – results

The last seven are about to become the last six.

The judges were asked about their impressions on Friday’s performance.
Roslan: “Everybody okay except Faizull.”
Kak Jee: “Same. All okay except Faizull.”
Paul: “Nobody okay, except Nita and Daniel.”

It is weird to find Paul coming to the same conclusion as I did.

I had voted for Nita and Daniel based on their performances.

At the last minute, just before voting closed, I voted for Farah as well.

Now for the forecast by the judges. Who will be out?

Roslan: “Faizull.”
Kak Jee: “Ash and Faizull.”
Paul: “The girls are splitting the votes between them. Nita, Farah and Xerra will be in the lowest three.”

Paul is getting prophetic. Nita, Farah and Xerra turned out to be the three with the lowest votes.

And leaving the show is …………….Xerra.

She sang her song as the show ended, and she announced, “For Paul”.

On Friday, Paul said that we would hear that song again on Sunday as she leaves. That was so on target. Among the 3 judges, Paul has proven to be more spot-on than the rest. He’s not as retarded as he looks.

Malaysian Idol 2 - Spectaculars 4

Tonight the theme was local songwriters.

The guest judge was non other than Izham, the big shot of 8TV. He looks a bit of a nerd to me, although he talks confidently.

Here are the comments:-

Nita - I thought she was pitchy, and somewhat lacking in power.
Roslan: "You sang like the beauty you are."
Kak Jee: "Very stunning. Lebih lagi. Menjiwa lagi."
Izham: "Some pitchy probelms. But crossing over to become a star."
Paul:"You sing naturally with emotion. It could have been more intense. Not bad."

Adam - Did a lot of prancing on stagelike a school girl before puberty. I did not like the scruffy dressing .Sang OK as usual. But boring.
Roslan: "Seronok. I enjoy."
Kak Jee: "Good one."
Izham: "You are an entertainer."
Paul:"It could not have been more feminine if a girl had sung it. Didn't like it. The key was too low for you."

Ash - I wasn't impressed.
Roslan: "Good effort."
Kak Jee: "Steady." (But I could tell she was being polite.)
Izham: "You are a normal singer. Not a star."
Paul:"Generally weak. Patchy and pitchy"

Daniel - I thought he sang well. In fact, he should sing Malay songs instead of English songs.
Roslan: "Saya suka."
Kak Jee: "Semua ada. Very good"
Izham: "You should sing this type of songs." (My sentiments exactly.)
Paul:"You did it really well"

Faizull - fat Kampung Rocker sang like someone with a bad second hand karaoke set.It wa horrible. In the end, he cried becaus he felt the song too much. Clearly, that was a loss of control.
Roslan: "Boring."
Kak Jee: "apa jadi? Halfway through, you lost it!"
Izham: "Concentrat and deliver!."
Paul:"I know that is not you!" (Paul thinks it is an alien cricket singing in his place.)

Farah - She sang from a seated position most of the time. I wasn't impressed. A seated position does not allow one to bring out the lungs fully into play.
Roslan: Thinks she should pick songs that are more suitable.
Kak Jee: "Flow must be suitable."
Izham: "If I have a record company, I will sign you up straitaway." (Huh?)
Paul:"It was weird!"

Xerra - It was sweet. The crowd loved it.
Roslan: "Bagus."
Kak Jee: "Bagus."
Izham: "Your high is not too high."
Paul: I think he said something about the possibility of Xerra leaving this Sunday. I did not quite catch it though.

I have not quite made up my mind on who to give my votes to.

One other thing: Cheryl talks fast. Like a train without brakes. She must be auditioning for a part in the "Gilmore Girls".

* Sunday update *
I caught the show again on Sunday on TV3 (because I did not feel like going out in the balmy weather,) and this time I listened to the 7 contestants with my eyes closed. Just wanted to know which contestant could get me to sleep. Since my eyes were already closed, I figured that I have already done half the work for them.

and my conclusions?

The best two vocals were performed by the Baby-faced Elf Daniel and Giraffe Genes Nita. Nita had the disadvantage of being the first singer, so I factored that little factoid in.

The worst two? Ash and Fat Kampung Rocker.

Spectaculars 3 – results

Impressions of the judges on last Friday’s performance:
Roslan: “didn’t give us 100%”
Kak Jee: “Luarkan semua yang ada.”
Kak Je’s comment reminds me of going to the mamak shop and saying, “Semua taroh.”
Paul: He said a lot of things and I have little idea what he was talking about. Something about projecting your identity and knowing who you are. Paul does not like people who don’t know who they are. Luckily, among the contestants, we don’t have any amnesiacs.

Of the contestants, all three judges said that Farah had improved the most.

Now for the predictions on who’s leaving tonight:
Roslan: “Semua boleh keluar except Faizull.”
Kak Jee: “Daniel”
Paul: “Ejay, Xerra and Ash.”

And leaving us tonight is………Ejay.

Ejay was not crestfallen. Judges comments:
Roslan: “Unik, tapi tak sedap.”
KJ: You lok good….yadda yadda….good try.”
Paul: “…typical kampung rock star”

Ash – He sang okay, but I wasn’t blown away.
Roslan: “Saya suka.”
KJ: “Bagus.”
Anuar: “I like it.”
Paul: “I see a merchant banker who’s riding his luck.“

Adam – We were told that he is good friends with Nita and Azam. “Nita, you’re my kakak,” he said. I bet Nita says the same thing to him. There’s nothing different in his songs from one week to the next.
Roslan: “Baik.”
KJ: “Suka sangat.”
Anuar: “Bagus.”
Paul: Actually, I can’t remember what Paul tried to say. Something about the cheeky side of Adam which we never get to see. Although it sounded like Paul would like to see a monkey on stage or something to that effect.

Farah - She still looked amateurish, but for the first time, I felt goose pimples. The crowd loved her performance.
Roslan: “Tiada complaint.”
KJ: “Lebihkan lagi. Be yourself.” (That’s an oxymoron)
Anuar: “You’re ready to buat album sendiri.”
Paul: “No real re-interpretation. Didn’t like it that much.”

Ejay – This week, her performance borders on the sassy. She did not impress me though. But of course, the Sabahans will be rooting for her.
Roslan: “Saya tak faham macam mana you dapat vote.” (Meaning that the guy does not understand things like the telephone and SMS.)
KJ: “Hari ini bagus.”
Anuar: “Last week was better than this week. The low register was shaky.”
Paul: “I don’t know who’s been voting for you but I don’t think they will be voting for you this week.”
Actually, her family’s been voting for her and yes, they will be voting for her again this week. Will somebody please explain this to Paul? Slowly….and in simple language. Thank you.

Daniel - Frankly, I don’t know what he was singing, and I probably only recognise 10 words out of the whole song.
Roslan: “Hanya boleh nyanyi lagu yang senang.”
KJ: Dunno say what.
Anuar: “R & B susah untuk you.”
Paul: “Your worst performance ever. That was terrible.”

Nita – Giraffe Genes looked smashing in her dress. Great delivery. One of the better performances of the evening. Boring in some parts though. She has not been improving over the weeks. Maybe she has peaked.
Roslan: “Baik.”
KJ: “Bagus.”
Anuar: “You got star value.”
Paul: “Could have been great, but it wasn’t.”

Xerra – Anorexic Pink-haired Girl could certainly move on stage. She was more energetic tonight than previously. I think she specially ate an extra bowl of rice for the performance. Her low notes were a delight to hear. But her high notes were lame.
Roslan: “Tak sedap langsung.”
KJ: “Sempurna.”
Anuar: “You’re ready. Buat album cepat cepat.”
Paul: “It was more style over substance. But it was good.”

My votes this week go to Farah again. If I am in a generous mood, I may even give some votes to Xerra and Nita.

Malaysian Idol 2 - Spectaculars 2 – Results

At the beginning of the show, we learned that it was Paul Moss’s birthday.

Birthday? You mean Paul Moss was born, like all of us? And all this while I thought that he was hatched out from a stone. Man, this whole thing is so fucking weird.

Jien is starting to piss me off majorly by making a big fuss over Paul Moss week after week after week. It’s like he can’t get enough of the Kiwi. Hey Jien, don’t do shit like this on the show! Go get a hotel room! And if you can’t afford a room, the lobby toilets are free of charge. Sheeeeesh!!!

Okay, the predictions about who’s gonna exit this show …..

Roslan: “Daniel and Ejay based on performance. Adam and Azam based on voting trend.”
Kak Jee: “Adam and Ejay”
Paul: “I’m worried for Farah.”

You needn’t worry Paul, cos I voted for Farah. I’m part-Klingon, and one Klingon vote equals 33722 earthling votes.

And the lowest 3 vote getters were:
Nita
Xerra
Azam

And leaving us tonight will be ……….Azam.

I think it was that old fashioned “rose scene” that did him in. And of course, his rasping voice quality played a part as well.

Azam stood stoically. But Xerra, Nita and Ejay were in tears. Adam was sobbing uncontrollably. After Friday’s “almost manly” performance, Adam turned back into his old self again tonight.

Hot Babe, who was watching the show with me, imperiously told me not to act so surprised at Adam’s shuddering sobs. She said that modern males should be sensitive and that I should learn to be a metrosexual.

WTF? I don’t want to be a metrosexual! I don’t want to sob on TV, and I don’t want to use moisturizer.

She said that since I live in a metro, I have to be a metrosexual.

I told her I grew up in a kampung. You know what that makes me? A kampungsexual.

Bloggers doing a good cause

Some bloggers are blogging for a good cause. She dept parroting what Roslan and Kak Jee said, so I am not going to blog her comments.

Tonights theme is on colour, any song about colour.

Daniel sang “Somewhere over the rainbow”. That’s seven colours. It was a weak effort. He’s still having diction problems.
Roslan: “Anak yang bawa lorry.”
Kak Jee: Better than last week.
Paul: Said something about Judy Garland which I did not get. Who the heck is Judy Garland? Not a porn star obviously. Anybody can explain to me what Paul’s comment on Judy Garland was?

Nita was next. She looked casual in white slacks. She sang a Malay song and the singing was ordinary only.
R: “Biasa. Tiada creativity.”
KJ: “Overall not bad”
P: “Boring. Should have picked a different song.”
Paul made a comment that most Malay songs are boring. I agree. Malay songs suffer from having not enough composers who are daring enough to experiment. Very few songs actually stand out. Some songs, like “Gemilang” allow the singer to display a wider range of tones but these are the exceptional few. What we really need is an influx of new blood to shake things up. Cantonese songs also suffer from the same syndrome. Not only that, a lot of them sound the same.

Farah sang “Colours of the Wind”. The movement of her right hand fascinated me. Her inadequate mike work caused her song to appear soft at times. But the parts that came out well was nice to listen too.
R: “Bagus”
KJ: “Kasi Oooomph”
P: Commented unfavourably onher dress. Said that it was good for shopping in 1Utama but suitable for the stage. We learned later that it was her mum who made the dress.

Azam sang “Se kuntum mawah merah”. To me, it was polished but ordinary. Azam has a slight rasping quality to his voice which makes a lot of songs unsuitable for him. He sang with a rose, dropped it, sing a bit, picked it up, sang some more. It was so old fashion. And corny. I do not think he learned that move from his father. More like from his grandfather. Then he gave the rose to Dayang.
R: “Buat style lain.”
KJ: “Suara bagus, jelas”
Paul commented that the theatrics with the rose made him want to vomit.

Ash sang “Lady in Red”. It was easy to listen to. But his control of the voice was not that fantastic.
R: “Executed it well”
KJ: “ Much better”
P: ”Who is Ash? I still don’t get you!”
Now that is not surprising. Paul, not being very bright, tend not get a lot of things.

Xerra came next. I liked her delivery but still thing her voice is not resonating enough when compared to Farah’s.
R: “Saya suka”
KJ ; “Feel ada”
P: “You don’t have a powerful voice do you? It wasn’t bad.”

Adam came and delivered an emotional performance. He was not as bapok as he was previously.
R: “Membosankan”
KJ ; “When you go back, look for something.”
P: “I did not like it.”

Ejay tried a rock version of “Black eyed boy”
I couldn’t remember what Roslan said. But KJ said that “song does not suit your voice”. Then Paul argued with her.

Fat Kampung Rocker was last. I did not like his “ronda-ing” around on the stage. Looked like amateur karaoke to me. Paul said that there was too much posing and not enough singing.

I'm voting for Farah.

Spectacular 1 – Results

On being asked to predict the results of Spectacular 1, the judges’ predictions on the ones to exit were:

Roslan: Ash and Ejay.
Kak Jee: Ash and Ejay.
Paul: Ash, Ejay, Trish, Xerra and Atilia.

Of course, my prediction was it will be Ejay but won’t be Ash.

The results were: Trish and Atilia won’t be going on to the next round. Damn, I was only half right.

The reaction of the judges?

Roslan said, “I want Malaysians to wake up!”
Kak Jee said, “What happened?”
Paul seemed less shocked.

Both Atilia and Trish have strong voices. They don’t look that great, being too heavy looking, but they sing great. With their exit, I can predict with a 60% certainty that the next Malaysian Idol will be Nita. The others are not consistent nor capable enough to give a good enough fight.

Let’s go down the list:

Ash: Does not have a great performance to date.
Adam: Can only sing in one language
Azam: Can only sing in one language
Baby Faced Elf: Diction problems
Fat kampong Rocker: Can only sing in on language, and also only rock songs.
Farah: Versatile, performs great, but not very consistent yet.
Anorexic Pink Haired Girl: Does not have a great performance to date.
Ejay: Diction problems

Looks like the only competition to Giraffe Genes will be provided by Farah. It is important that a singer in Malaysian Idol be able to sing in two languages. Otherwise the votes are not going to come in. Malaysian Idol has a more international image than the other local reality shows and fans expect some international flavour.

Why wasn’t Ash and Ejay voted out? I think it was because of the Panic factor as well as the Rebel factor.

Panic factor: Both ash and Ejay’s fans voted in overdrive because they thought that these two were on their way out.

Rebel factor: People voted for Ash because Roslan said Ash shouldn’t be here. We saw the same thing happen during American Idol when Simon Cowell said that Scott Savol should just pack his bags and get ready to go. People are perverse. They like to prove a judge wrong.

On another note, I just wrote a new story on a character called Swordsman Wu. It will be one of the best short stories I have ever written. Go and read it in my other blog and leave your opinion on what you think about the story. It was pretty boring actually. The characters were flat except for Fat Kampung Rocker. Last year, I remembered that Jac stamped her superiority on the show from the first day. This time, there wuz nobody outstanding yet.

There was a guest judge, Nora, whom I didn’t find particularly interesting in her comments. Most of the time it was a case of “Dunno say wut”. She must have caught Fauziah Latiff’s disease.

Okay, here’s the roundup.

Atilia : Sang a fast number. The voice was okay. But she looked like a Frumpy Housewife trying to be a singer. She just couldn’t groove.
Roslan said “Menakutkan.”
Kak Jee said, “Colour and cutting is important.” Yes she said that!
Nora – Dunno say what.
Paul said, “Can do so much better.”

Ash : Not so good. I didn’t know what he was singing about.
Roslan said “Tiada suara rock. Tak elok.”
Kak Jee : Dunno say wut
Nora – Dunno say what.
Paul said, “Must have bought a ‘Rockstar for Dummies’ book. If all things were equal, you should be out after this.”

Azam : Better than his last performance, but still boring for me.
Roslan said “No regrets in choosing you.”
Kak Jee said, “Boleh tahan.”
Nora said, “Suka style awak.”
Paul said, “Not bad.”

Trish : Good try. But I wasn’t blown away. Sassy Groove Mama didn’t use her full capacity.
Roslan didn’t like her clothes. (White suit)
Kak Jee said, “Put more attitude.”
Nora said, “Memang bagus.”
Paul said, “Total rubbish.Boring and dumb.”

Adam : He was almost seductive. And he looked directly at the TV cameras. The crowd loved it.
Roslan said, “Tiada appeal.”
Kak Jee : Dunno say wut
Nora said, “Character jantan sikit.” Goodness. You mean that everybody knows that he’s unmanly?
Paul said, “Had a cheeky element. Not bad.”

Farah : The beginning was pitchy and out of tune. She got better at the end.
Roslan said, “Okay, tapi tak cukup.”
At this stage, Paul started to disagree with Roslan by saying, “How could she do more than that for the last 30 seconds?” That was pretty rude of Paul to jump in when he should have waited his turn. Didn’t his teacher taught him the golden rule?
“ONE.DONKEY.AT.A.TIME!”
What an idiot! Oooops. That wasn’t appropriate. I should say, “What a fucking idiot!”
That’s better. Heaps.
Kak Jee : Dunno say wut
Nora said, “Semua ada. Lebih ‘feel’ lagi.”
When it came to Paul’s turn again, the idiot said, “Beginning a bit dodgy……pitching……..middle to end, okay.”

Ejay : I liked it moderately. The diction is totally out though.
Roslan said, “Saya tak paham apa you nyanyi.” The problem with Roslan is that you have to sing very very slowly to make him understand anything.
Kak Jee said, “Groove must be there.”
Nora said, “Pronunciation needs improvement.”
Paul said, “Mumbling bumbling out of tune.”

Faizull : I enjoyed it. But I found Fat Kampung Rocker’s half-crouching position to be a bit of a put-off. His dancing was rather rural.
Roslan said, “Tolong jangan buat ice skating macam ini.” He was referring to one of Faizull’s dance movements, which was a bit odd.
Kak Jee : Dunno say wut
Nora said, “Ada semangat, memang rock.” I think Nora is here to make polite noises only.
Paul said, “Too old school.”
Then there was the discussion with emcees Jien and Cheryl whether Faizull could do songs other than rock. I doubt it.

Daniel : I love it. There were diction problems in the singing, but the singing was easy to listen to. Wasn’t one of Baby Face Elf’s best efforts. But should be enough to make it through.
Roslan said, “…..mumbling.”
Kak Jee : Dunno say wut
Nora said, “Sedap di dengar.”
Paul said, “Very lame. Put me to sleep.”

Xerra : Aneroxic Pink Hair Girl has hair, which used to be red, but now has turned to pink. Enjoyed her singing. The dancing was better tthan most of the others but still not quite polished yet.
Roslan said, “Awak pandai.”
Kak Jee said, “Good attitude” or something. Dunno wut.
Nora said, “Okay lah.” Still polite.
Paul said, “…didn’t sing from the soul.”

Nita : Okay, polished. But I wasn’t blown away. Giraffe Genes could have done better.
Roslan : Dunno say wut
Kak Jee said, “You’ve got the style.”
Nora said, “Tinggi orang nya.”
Paul said, “Boring.”

There were no outstanding performances. Compare that to the last year’s opening Spectaculars when Jac stamped her superiority on the show with her singing. It was a Malay song, but I can’t remember what. Just from that song alone, I knew she was going to beat the other ten.

This time around, I think it will be a battle between Sassy Groove Mama and Giraffe Genes.

Who will be out in this round? Can’t tell yet. Most likely Ejay.

Will Ash be out? I don’t think so. There are voters who don’t like the judges, and will vote opposite to what the judges recommend. Those votes are most likely to flow to Ash. May just be enough to keep him till the next round.

Who am I voting? Haven’t made up my mind yet. Sassy Groove Mama and Giraffe Genes? Aneroxic Pink Hair Girl and Frumpy Housewife? I dunno yet.

Malaysian Idol 2 – The journey so far.

This was a special TV show last night to introduce the 11 finalists. On the programme, callers could call in to ask the judges and singers questions.

Roslan did not turn up. Kak Jee turned up wearing a red bandana on her head. She looked like a bandit queen. She should carry a sword.

The first person to call in asked the most boring and mindless question,
“What do you hope for in a Malaysian Idol?”

Look, we all know what they were hoping for, okay? Someone who could sell CDs and bring in fat profits to the TV show and the record company. This is a freaking business, dummy!

We were told that the girls Atilia, Sassy Groove Mama, and Farah shared a room. The producers made them share 3 to a room? Cheapskates.

Paul Moss then smiled into the camera. I wish he wouldn’t do that. He looked better without smiling. I reached for the bucket but didn’t puke.

One caller said that she watched the show because of Paul Moss. I reached for the bucket again. But mercifully my self control was good.

Oh yeah, somebody asked about Lee Kar Wei. Paul said that Kar Wei didn’t measure up in terms of originality and style. He said that Kar Wei was already singing at 95 % of her capability, and there was not much more she could improve. That was a most idiotic thing to say.

Kar Wei is only 17 years old. How could it be possible to reach 95% at 17 years of age? Don’t fucking talk to me about figures, Paul, coz I’m better at it now than you could ever be in another 50 years!

The man was so full of shit that he needed a sewerage truck all to himself last night!

Did you guys hear Cheryl Samad say “Hallo”? It sounded more like “Halleaou.” If this is a whole new game, then I want in. Yeah, I’ll also be coining my own words from now on. Just for this show.

Fat kampung Rocker was there. He looked neater, and was still as entertaining as before.

Oh, you may have noticed that I got the Haloscan commenting system now. The previous Blogger commenting system was driving me nuts. Almost half of the visitors signed in as “Anonymous”. And I couldn’t tell one anonymous from another. If you wish to leave a comment and support your favourite singer, you may do so. But please use a nick(name) instead of being “Anonymous”. We don't want to be more confused than we already are, do we?

On another note, this site is now the top search result for Malaysian Idol on MSN Search. Whoa! Steady, man!

Haloscan commenting and trackback have been added to this blog.

My other blog

No update yet for this blog.

Go and read my other inane bullshit blog instead. I just did not feel passionate enough about any of the performers to vote.

Last night, the winners were announced.

Judges' choice went to Wooden Face Azam. The reason the choice went to Azam and not Liza was because of sex, I guess. Liza definitely can outsing Azam. But there are already 6 girls in the finals, and the show producers probably thought that too many girls would make the finals unbalanced.

Voters' choice went to Adam.

I do not agree with any of the choices, but because I did not vote, I do not have a moral right to rant. So, I'll just be a good little boy and accept whatever Strepsil-deprived frog they put up.

Malaysian Idol 2 Wildcard show

Six contestants are fighting for the last two places in the finals. It was not that interesting as those 6 were rejects from previous rounds.

For some reason, there were only two judges in the Wildcard Show. Kak Jee(Fauziah Latifff) was missing. Where were you, Kak Jee? Something better to do with your time? Well, me too. But I spent it watching your boring wildcard show. Like any loyal fan.

Here are my comments.

Fauzi: Earlier he said that he would sing as though he was singing to his mom. His voice was good but the song delivery had insufficient emotion to it.
Roslan said, “Susah dapat votes.”
Paul said, “Atrocious. Sang like a half inflated balloon.”
Tell me what a fully inflated balloon would sound like, Paul? Apart from “Bang!”?

Adam: Gave a polished performance. But lacked a certain oomph and star quality. Okay but boring.
Roslan said, “Awak menyany bagus.”
Paul said, “No intensity. You looked stiff.”

Aesar: Gave a more vibrant attempt than his previous outing. But jerky. Not really fun to watch.
Roslan said, “Masih tak puas hati. Rileks sikit ”
Paul said, “You’re singing as if you’re concentrating on body movement. ”

Kash: It was a boring song. And the voice quality was lacking. He sounded like one of those bad radio commercials.
Roslan said, “Macam kari kepala ikan tanpa garam. ”
Actually, to me it was more like “Macam kari kepala ikan tanpa kari. ”
Paul said, “Three words for you; pitching, pitching and pitching.”
Actually, that was only one word, Paul.

Hair To Butt a.k.a. Lisa: This girl had hair so long that it covered her butt. Had a big sultry voice. Sang a Toni Braxton number. Good performance. But mumbled some of her words at the beginning.
Roslan said, “Jangan kolong perkataan ”
Paul said, “Sang it pretty well.”

Adam: This was the guy that Kak Jee previously said should be more manly. That was a very astute observation from Kak Jee. He gave a good polished performance. No spontaneity in his movements. Thus it didn’t move me.
Roslan said, “Enak sekali.”
Paul said, “It was cabaret. It looked rehearsed. It looked fake. Not connecting.”
Paul is right. The girls won’t be voting for him again.

My choice?
The best performance of the night was by Hair To Butt. I think she will get in. Not to vote her in would be unfair. I have not made up my mind how the other vote should go. All the guys were just plain boring. Most likely I’ll give it to Fauzi because I liked his voice and stage character. And the fact that he thinks highly of his mum. But still, I think he made a mistake by singing as if he was singing to his mum. You can’t work up an emotional intensity by doing shit like that. He should have sung as though he was in the shower singing to his soapy balls. Works for me. Everytime.

Results of Workshop 3

I voted for Trish, Daniel and Farah. The line was difficult to get through on Sunday evening. Too many last minute voters, I guess.

At the results show, the judges were asked to forecast the results. All three judges forecasted Trish, Daniel and Farah.

For once, the judges were able to see things the right way, which is my way.

And the winners are:

Sassy Groove Mama a.k.a. Trish
Kiddy Face Elf a.k.a. Daniel
Farah

Isn’t it beautiful when everybody sees things my way?
That is the way the world should be run. Better believe it. I was so darn busy that by the time I got to the TV, the show had already started. So I missed the start and the first song. Damn!

Intan: Did not hear her sing, but the short truncated sound clip sounded okay to me. Will try to catch the Sunday repeat. Or read the comments in somebody else’s blog.

Yasir: I wasn’t impressed by that one. I didn’t catch what the judges said about him as my attention was elsewhere.

Kash: Again, not impressed. Too much note bending. Although Roslan and Kak Jee said that it was a good try, Paul said that there were a lot of mistakes.

Trish: Sassy Groove Chick got the audience in the mood to par-tay. Definitely the best performance for the evening. Should be good enough to make it to the next round. The judges sounded happy enough with her.

Aesah: Some Botak Guy with more hair on the chin than on the scalp. Didn’t like the performance. It was like listening to peas straining themselves through a mesh.
Roslan and Kak Jee said, “Not satisfactory”
Paul blamed it on the bad song choice.

Farah: Nice tone to her voice. But I think it lacks a certain oomph. But she’s definitely better than many of the other performers.
Roslan was not very impressed. Kak Jee said, “Style-kan lagi your performance.” This is one of those times that I don’t quite know what she meant by that. How does one style-kan the singing? I know you can style-kan your hair though. That woman must have been confused with something else.
Paul said, “I liked it. Not bad.”
I forgot to mention that Farah was pretty. Of course Paul would like it! Was there ever any doubt?

Farish: The performance was pitchy and boring. I couldn’t wait for the song to end.
Roslan said, “Hancur.”
Kak Jee said, “Kurang berpuas hati.”
Paul said, “Totally tragic. Diabolical song choice. Disaster.”

Daniel: He sang a difficult song. I liked the voice. Kiddy Face Elf will garner female fans, because he looks cute and doesn’t sound too bad.
Roslan said, “I’m disappointed.”
Kak Jee said, “Love your voice.”
Paul said, “Doesn’t matter what we say. I think we’ll be seeing you.”

Here are my picks:
Kiddy Face Elf and Sassy Groove Chick get my votes for the first two slots. As for the third slot, I’ll probably give it to Farah.

Results of Workshop 2

And the winners are

Ejay – I’m glad she got through
Ash – I’m not surprised, although the judges were
Nita – Giraffe Genes was practically a shoo-in

I voted for both Ejay and Giraffe Genes. Although I was deciding between Ash and Adam, I ended up not voting for either of them.

M.I. judges, Roslan and Kak Jee, were surprised that Ash got through and not Adam. It was not that surprising, really. I am sure that most of those who voted were teenage girls. If you were a teenage girl, would you have voted for Adam? I think not. I did say that his slightly girlish movements would not appeal to the girls. Besides, Ash definitely looked more hip and cool, and has a better voice quality than Adam. I know the psychology of teenage girls, even though I have never been one before. Honest!

Oh yeah, the naughty streak in me enjoyed seeing the look of incomprehension on the faces of those 2 judges.

YES!

The look of pure dumb incomprehension.

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

Paul did not seem disappointed at all about the results. He did mention that viewers voted on things such as personality rather than base everything on the performance alone. He was right. How did you think someone like Fat Kampung Rocker, with his supertight jeans, got through the previous week? That one was not a singer. But definitely an entertaining character.

Two workshops over, one more to go.

Malaysian Idol 2 Workshop 2

I didn’t think that Workshop 2 was better than Workshop 1. There were no weird characters who stood out and most of the singing was a tad boring.

Ash - Pleasant enough to listen to. But not that exceptional. Has the disadvantage of being the first one on the stage.
Roslan said, “It didn’t take off.”
Kak Jee said something forgettable.
Paul said, “Disaster.”

Suria - Her singing almost put me to sleep.
Roslan said, “Lack of originality.”
Kak Jee said, “Latih lagi di depan cermin.” Oh come on, surely she could say something more useful than that?
Paul remarked that it was “very ordinary”.

Dianne - She sang a version of “Imagine”, the John Lennon hit. I didn’t like it.
Roslan said, “Don’t have the intensity. Not happening.”
Kak Jee asked, “What happened? Spirit is not there.”
Paul said, “Horrible.”

Jerome - One word – amateurish. I can’t believe he made it this far.
Roslan remarked “Macam tengok konsert sekolah.” Roslan was spot on this time.
Kak Jee said “Style must be right.” Seriously, what is she trying to say?
Paul said, “Horrible.”

Adam - The guy sounds okay. Easy to listen to. But I have a feeling his range is not very wide. Also, his slightly girlish movements won’t appeal to the girls. And didn’t appeal to me as well.
Roslan commented that he brought back some credibility to the contest.
Kak Jee said “Love your voice.”
Paul remarked, “Smooth. Not bad.”

Ejay – She sang a very difficult song. That was overly ambitious. But she had the ability to hit the high notes. Definitely one of the best singers in this workshop. If she gets through this round, watch out for her. But the song she sang did not come off smoothly. To be fair, I don’t think any of the other contestants could sing this particular song.
Roslan said, “You don’t have the ability to execute that kind of song.“ Spot on again, dude. I think Roslan is in top form this week.
Kak Jee said something nonsensical like “need to know more about singing.” Actually, Jee, we need to know more about what you are talking about the whole evening. You keep on speaking in an alien lingo like that and we’re gonna need an interpreter from the planet Tatooine.
Paul said, “The pitching suck at times but you’ve got talent. I hope you get through.”

Azam – Better looking than Adam. He picked an easy song. The song was well executed but uninspiring. More like karaoke.
Roslan said, “Nyanyi biasa.”
Kak Jee said, “Good try.” Does that mean she was impressed or not? I think we’re gonna need that Tatooine interpreter after all.
Paul remarked, “That really put me to sleep.” It wasn’t that bad, Paul.

Nita - This girl is tall and lanky. Small chested. Pleasant enough to look at, but I wouldn’t call her beautiful. She’s a club singer and has a fairly good voice.
Roslan said, “You have a good style.”
Kak Jee said, “Nita boleh pergi jauh. Gorgeous. Stunning.”
Paul said, “Not bad.”

While Nita was standing in between the two co-hosts Cheryl and Jien later, I noticed that she was taller than Jien. I also noticed that Cheryl’s left hand kept patting Nita’s butt. They should have TV cameras at the back. That ought to be interesting.

My three choices for this batch?
Ejay and Nita obviously have more talent than the rest.
My third slot will go to a guy. Either Ash or Adam. Although Adam may have performed better in this round, Ash has the more appealing voice quality. Will decide later.

Results of Workshop 1

And the winners are

Atilia – no surprise
Fat Kampung Rocker – some surprise
Anorexic Red haired Girl – very big surprise

M.I. judge, Roslan, who was obviously surprised by the results, recovered sufficiently to give us the usual diplomatic bullshit on how Malaysians are voting for talent. Kak Jee, also surprised, made the usual tactful noises.

Only Paul said that some of the better singers on Friday were sitting on the sofa(meaning voted out). Which is true. I think Paul is the only honest one tonight.

Malaysian Idol 2 Workshop 1

This group of 8 contestants are fighting for 3 places in the finals. Not an impressive bunch I must say.

The judges were Roslan, Kak Jee and Paul; same as previously. What’s with Kak Jee and the striped bandage on her head? She looked like she’s trying to recover from a splitting headache. I’ve seen Handyplast that looked better. Talk about bad fashion sense.

Okay, bring on the contestants already!

Norsila – not impressive. Just a pretty face and nothing much else. Paul remarked, “That was pretty awful.”

Shone – soft voiced and not dynamic. “Tak sedap langsung,” said Roslan. You could say the same about Roslan.

Faizul (Fat Kampung Boy) – Came on stage with jeans too tight. His performance was not all that great. Paul called him the love child of Joan Jett and Amy Search.

Atilia – the first good voice we heard tonight. Jee said she had the power. Paul made a mindless statement, “No record company is going to give you a record deal based on your looks.” Oh, really? Shades of Kar Wei. I’m starting to think that Paul read my recent rant. There’s more coming your way, Paul.

Fauzi – good power, nice voice. I think Roslan and Jee were wrong in their adverse comments. Paul said, “Pitching problems, otherwise good performance.”

Lisa – This girl was out of tune. She had nice waist long hair that reached down over her butt. Must have taken a long time to grow it. Like me, the judges were not impressed with her singing.

Faizal – Sweet voice. Good performance. But the judges did not think so. I think the judges were wrong on this one.

Xerra (Anorexic Red Haired Girl) – Her performance was uninspiring. Roslan said, “Saya amat kecewa.” Jee said something forgettable. Paul said, “You shrunk away!” Maybe it’s the serious lack of food.

If you’re voting, the SMS vote number is 33722. Just type ‘VOTE name’.

My preferences for tonight?

Atilia, Fauzi and Faizal.

Malaysian Idol and the Kar Wei uproar

The uproar in the online forums on why 17-year old 6th form schoolgirl, Lee Kar Wei, was eliminated by the judges, for the Malaysian Idol top 24 contestants, refuses to abate. You may remember Kar Wei. She was a guest singer in last year’s Malaysian Idol Finals in Genting. She was only 16 at that time but she blew the audience away with her singing. The shock that followed her departure is nationwide. On Tuesday night, the 8TV Quickie announced that M.I. judge Paul Moss would turn up on Wednesday night on TV to explain why Kar Wei was rejected.

So last night I waited. Till 12 midnight.

Where were you, Paul? You had something better to do? Well, so had I. But I dropped whatever shit I was doing and waited patiently to hear your side of the story!
Till 12 midnight!

Did he show up on TV? Big fucking NO.

Did he give a reason why? Another big fucking NO.

Look around you, Paul.
Is it dark? Does the air smell funny?
Isn’t it obvious that your head is up your ass?
And you couldn’t find your way out to come to the 8TV studios? Is that it?

You know what I think? I think that Kar Wei was eliminated because she was a favourite to win. Her problem was a Low Humpability Factor. The winner of Malaysian Idol gets a recording contract and the recording company has to promote the album. This is a tough business. The most successful singers are those who have good looks. Then girls want to be you and guys want to hump you.

Kar Wei looks like a vegetable gardener. On a humpability scale of 1 to 10, I’ll rate her a 2. Her teeth are funny and she moves funny. Her face is plain and her figure is out of shape. If she wins the Malaysian Idol crown, it will be a disaster for the record company. So she has to be eliminated at all costs.

Is my theory correct, Paul? Maybe, maybe not.
But I so wanted to hear your side of the story. I gave you the opportunity to explain the shitty decision that you and the other two retarded judges made.
Still unable to pull your head out yet?
While you're in there, stick your tongue out, Paul.
Like the taste of your own shit?
No? Well, neither do we!

I remember Paul saying that Kar Wei had “limited talent” during the Theatre Auditions on Day 3. The fans didn’t buy it. Kar Wei came onto the 8TV show last night and asked what Paul meant by that. If Kar Wei was not a good enough singer, do you think that 8TV would have invited her to appear on TV?

Here’s a tip, Paul. Keep your tongue sticking out as you pull your head out of your butt. It dredges your colon clean of fecal matter. I don’t have to explain to you the wonders of colonic irrigation, do I?
‘Limited talent’ my ass.
That excuse was so limpdick that a ton of Viagra couldn’t pull it up to stay at half mast.

In last night’s TV appearance, hosts Adam and Marion asked Kar Wei to sing a few lines from a song, and she obliged. I think the fans are going to be convinced more than ever that the judges were wrong in eliminating her. And Adam said that Paul did not turn up to explain why because he was too chicken. Chicken? That explains a lot.

Now listen, you three lame ass retro-products of evolution masquerading as song judges. We fans vote with our own money to make your show a fucking success and you think you don’t owe us any explanation? You think you can just treat us as discarded backlane whores? We are the ones footing the bill, not you! We fucking pay your salaries!

The mindless drivel you spew out as fair comments often make less sense than a virgin dick shagging a hornet’s nest. And after every show, my IQ drops 20 points until its only 50 points higher than the combined total of you three.

But did you hear me complain? The fact that I am willing to listen to crawly lowlifes like you for the SECOND year running testifies to my infinite patience, and not because you sound remotely intelligent.

And how did you three get to be picked as judges? Were you picked for your ability to listen to music with your ears boxed tightly inside your ass passage? Don’t you find the echo in there annoying? Well, we fans are annoyed even if you aren’t. And it’s taking us all the self-control we can muster not to bitchslap you three wormlike freaks into a threesome monotonal lullaby shitfest.

I strongly suggest that you go back to kindergarten and study the basics of “do-re-mi” again. Don’t you dare fail! Again! And this Friday, when I next tune in to Malaysian Idol, please take the effort to make more intelligible noises than a half-squashed cicada’s fart! Dumbasses.

Malaysian Idol: Theatre eliminations

Day 1

Nothing particularly exciting worth mentioning on the first day. Most of the Malaysian Idol hopefuls were required to perform on a theatre stage and at the end of the day, only 74 would be sent to the next round. So there certainly was a lot of practicing and practicing outside the theatre, with each singer practicing without unduly disturbing the others.

Except for this Fat Kampung Rocker. He would practice at the top of his voice. And get everybody else really pissed off! One girl described him as the Malaysian version of Constantine(American Idol finalist). And then she added, “I think he’s Constipate!”

Constipate my ass. Fat Kampung Rocker got thru’ to the next round.

Day 2

The 74 singers who got through from Day 1 were required to perform a duet. People were paired off by the judges and they would have to choose appropriate songs. This led to several bad song choices as the singers didn’t really understand each other. In fact, the teamwork was atrocious! Like goats trying to bleat in tune with ducks.

You should never pick a song that your partner can’t sing. And you should always stick to the format you practiced so as not to throw off your partner during the actual performance. That’s what some of them found out too late.

The only bright spot was this performance by a Red-haired Anorexic Girl who partnered a Short Cute Boy(called Daniel). They sang “Fire” and it was comparatively good. The judges lapped it up like starving cats.

Fat Kampung rocker made a mess of his song but he was told, to his surprise, that he got through to the next round. He celebrated by yelling at the TV camera, “Orang Kampung!” Now, we all know that Orang Kampung is a brand of the sex herb kacip fatima, the backyard version of Viagra for women, don’t we? I’ve blogged about kacip fatima, before, I believe. So what’s Fat Kampung Rocker’s connection with Orang Kampung? Is he peddling the stuff?

At the end of the day, 51 singers were left.

Day 3

Participants were required to sing the songs picked by the judges. Those who were asked to sing “Gemilang” fared badly. There was one girl with a good voice, nice figure, and she looked like a ‘7’ on a humpability scale of 1 to 10. Her mind went more or less blank when she sang “Gemilang” and she was given the opportunity to sing again. However, she chose to bow out. Which was a pity. Cos you don’t often get a ‘7’ appearing on Malaysian Idol.

The reason why only nice looking girls should be encouraged to sing on TV is because if you don’t like the song, you can always hump the TV. Don’t try this at home. Damn, what am I talking about…….it’s YOUR TV, not mine! Okay, try it and tell me the results. Should be fun to blog about.

I thin Nita, the slim Penang cafe singer got through to the final 24. Nice chick. Slightly on the thin side. Humpability factor 6.

Fat Kampung Rocker also got through. Humpability factor zero. And again he shouted “Orang Kampung” at the TV camera. I’m starting to like the guy. Even thinking of going out to buy me a bottle of kacip fatima. Then again, better not. It may have strange effects on males and make me horny for goats and ducks.

At the end of the day, only 24 were left. I'm not sure about the rules, but I think from this point onwards, the public will get to vote for their favourites. I’ve lots of money left unused on my prepaid handphone account. More than a hundred ringgit, I believe. Yes! Takes very little to make me happy, doesn't it?

Malaysian Idol Season 2 - KL Auditions

The KL auditions have shown the highest standards among the four auditions so far.

One girl sang the song “Masquarade.” She was nice to listen to. Yeah, she made it to the next round.

There was a rocker this time that got in. He sounded a bit like the Scorpions - high and shrill.

There was a guy who kept calling the M.I. judge Paul by another name; “Peter”. He wasn’t that good. So he didn’t get in.

A pretty girl called Emily sang. I thought she was good enough to make it to the next round. Roslan and Jee didn’t think so. But Paul thought she was good enough. I have to agree with Paul on this one. Emily was better than some of the earlier contestants who got in.

Paul said this to another participant, “You can’t sing to save your life.” Oh come on, just a simple “No” would have been sufficient.

A guy came on and sang the oldie hit “Sway”. Jee and Paul outvoted Roslan and he got in. He got in and he was not even as good as Emily!

Roslan lost his cool over one girl who lived near him. Her singing was atrocious. Sounded like strangling a cat with a sore throat. She refused to leave after singing.
Paul said, “Completely awful!”
Jee said, “Nyanyi tak bagus.”
Roslan said, “Keluar.” Yup, the guy lost his cool.

Look, if you want to get rid of somebody who has overstayed their welcome, you should at lest hire security personnel for that sort of thing.

There was a cute girl who came on and sang “Zombie”. It wasn’t good but still, it was fun to watch. She was like a wound up doll. At the end, Paul asked her, “Do you have a key at the back?”

Her friend, a boy came up next to sing “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman”. Weird choice of song for a guy, definitely. I hope he isn’t hinting that he’s going for a sex change operation. The song had all the judges in stitches. The guy remarked to Paul, “All you do is talk trash about people.” Way to go!

Oh, there was a Michael Jackson impersonator who sang “Billie Jean”. He was so out of tune that I thought he was singing something else. He did move a bit like Michael Jackson. In fact, I wish I can move like him.

We can’t end this post without mentioning this other odd character, a short nerdy Chinese boy who’s singing was clearly bad. He didn’t think highly of the judging and muttered in Hokkien on TV:
“Tooi chu khoon lah!
(Go back home and sleep lah!)
A lot of his comments were censored out. Heard this one though:
“Mai hor wa kuah teoh. Kuah jit tau pak jit tau.”
(Don’t let me see. See one time, whack one time.)
That was hilarious, coming from the nerd.

Yoda auditions for Malaysian Idol

My apologies to true die-hard Star Wars fans for this little irreverent piece. This article has been reproduced here from my other blog, Stepping Aside for Reality.

Yoda : Fed up is Yoda. Latest Star Wars movie about to hit town. But the people, they care not! Massive promotion, there is not! Movie mania, there is not! Media frenzy, there is not!

* Taking matters in his own hands, Yoda walked into Berjaya Times Square. By some mysterious quirk of events, he wandered into the room where the Malaysian Idol auditions were taking place. Malaysian Idol judges Roslan, Fauziah and Paul did not seem impressed by his appearance. *

Paul : What is your name?

Yoda : Yoda.

Roslan : We need your full name.

Yoda : Yoda Kickbutt, it is. Jedi master, I am.

Fauziah : Okay Yoda, what are you going to sing for us?

Yoda : Tell everybody about movie, I must. New movie ‘Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith’, you go. Awesome it is. Watch it, you should.

Paul : Is what, you talk…….sorry, what are you talking about?

Yoda : ‘Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith’

Roslan : That’s a very long title. Don’t believe I have heard that song before.

Fauziah : Yeah, me neither. Is it very old?

Yoda : No, new movie, it is.

Paul : No, no! We mean the song.

Yoda : What song?

Fauziah : The song you are going to sing for us.

Yoda : Advertise Star Wars Episode III, I do. Sing I need not!

Roslan : Yes you do! Everybody who walks into this room has to sing for us!

Yoda : Full of shit, you are.

Paul : We are Malaysian Idol judges. We are allowed to be full of shit.

Yoda : Sing, I shall not!

Fauziah : Are your afraid? Don’t worry, there’s nothing to fear.

Yoda : Fear? Know what you of fear? Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Sing, I shall.

Roslan : Good. We’re waiting, and we ain’t got all day.

* Yoda glared at the 3 Malaysian Idol judges, and cleared his throat.
“Ehhhhhhh……hmmmmm…….”
Halfway across the galaxy, Obi Wan Kenobi paused in his aerobics dancing lesson and was heard to mutter,
“I feel a disturbance in the Force.” *

Yoda : * sings *
“Star Wars Episode III, watch you must
Star Wars Episode III, watch you must
Star Wars Episode III, watch you must
Star Wars Episode III, watch you must
Star Wars Episode III, watch you must
Star Wars Episode III, watch you must……”

Paul : Oi! Stop! Stop! Stop!

Roslan : That was simply boring. A song sung entirely in E flat monotone is definitely a bad song choice.

Fauziah : For a monotonal song, your singing was a little bit pitchy. And your clothes is kurang sesuai lah. I’m going to have to report you to the fashion police.

Paul : Fuck it, man. That was horrible, incredibly horrible.

* Without saying a word, Yoda took out his light sabre and turned it on full force.

“Whaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnmmmmmmggggg”

The awesome power of the blade reverberated around the room and send shivers down the spines of the judges. *

Roslan : That was a great rendition! You picked the right song! You came here to win!

Fauziah : May I congratulate you on your good fashion sense! A star is born!

Paul : Brilliant, man, simply brilliant! We’re sending you through to the next round!

Yoda : Wait, Another song, I have!

Fauziah : What? You don’t say!

Yoda : “Can You Feel The Loaf Tonight” it is. Elton John hit, it is. From “Lion Kink”.

Paul : No, no, you mustn’t sing!

Yoda : * sings *
“There's a calm surrender, to the rush of day
When the call of the roti man, can't be turned away
Two ringgit in my pocket, and it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior just to eat with you
And can you feel the loaf tonight
It is where we are
It's enough for this bug-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
And can you feel the loaf tonight
Which you now digest
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Shit out the very best.”

* Yoda walked out, satisfied that he had promoted the movie well enough.
Paul was frozen in shock.
Roslan barfed over his pants.
It took about an hour to revive Fauziah. *

+ + + + + + + + +

Note from Viewtru to all:

Please remember to catch Star Wars Episode III.

If you have time, and if there’s nothing else on the other channels, and if you’re too lazy to switch off the TV, please watch the coming Malaysian Idol show as well.

Malaysian Idol Season 2 - Penang Auditions

The guy with the yellow shorts is back for another try. Remember Chris the masseuse who took part in the MI audition last year? He was so cute slapping his ass while doing his routine. This year he tried again, but this time without the yellow shorts, and he was boring. It just wasn’t fun anymore. Come back next year, Chris. And bring your yellow shorts next time. We miss the ass slapping.

Heard Paul said on TV:
“You’re the singing version of a hangover.”
“…..a human sleeping pill.”

Oh, there was one participant who was the previous Asia Bagus winner in 1996. She made it through although the judges were not totally impressed. They gave her a chance. Watching her sing is like watching sorrow pouring out of her lungs. She should be more relaxed. She may have gotten through this round but I don’t think she will make the finals.

One guy with a numb wooden expression rendered the song “Let it be”. Did I just typed “rendered”? It should be “murdered”. Paul wasn’t amused, and said, “You got the audacity to come here and destroy a classic Beatles song. You got some nerve, man.”

Yet another boy tried to sing the song “Gemilang”. Teruk betul. Paul told him that he sang like a hamster. Actually it was more like a hamster lullaby

Nobody looked interesting to me. Except for one slim chick called Nita. Actually she was more thin than slim. She is a café singer. And yeah, she got in.

The next auditions will be in KL.

Malaysian Idol Season 2 - JB Auditions

Tonight’s TV show of the JB auditions was boring.
We had a girl singing from a sheet of paper. Look, girl, if you are really keen, at least take the trouble to memorise the words.

Another girl took off her slippers to sing. No, she ain’t got it. As she was leaving Roslan said, “Jangan lupa selipar.”

The behaviour of Roslan was atrocious. One should not laugh at thebeinning of the song. Hear the singer out first and then laugh, okay?

Next audition will be in Penang.

Malaysian Idol Season 2 - Kuching Auditions

I know, I know. I’m a sucker for Malaysian Idol. And season 2 just opened. It wouldn’t be right if I don’t blog this.

I just saw the Malaysian Idol auditions in Kuching on TV. It did not appear to be that impressive.

The host, Jien is still around, but we have anew co-host in Cheryl. Cheryl seems comfortable enough in her role.

A word about the judges:
Roslan was his uncouth self as usual. You would think that after one year, his mannerisms would have improved. But no, it didn’t. The TV network couldn’t afford to hire a behaviourologist to work on him or what?
Jee was her composed self as usual. Soft and serious, she was. And she still looks classy.
Paul was acting like an impatient judgemental asshole. Yup, same as before. Some things never change.

The contestants were a nervous batch. I haven’t had my hearing assaulted like this since……since the last MI auditions. I’ll say it again: some things never change.

I wished somebody would sing something really different.
Like the one on “When you’re happy and you know it, clap your hair.”

Still, it was cute to hear one of the contestants address the judges as “Honourable judges”. Now, that sure was weird. Not that I think the judges are not honourable. I’m sure they are honourable when they are not being dishonourable.

But still, please don’t say that kind of shit in an audition, all right? Oh, the guy sang the song, “She will be loved”. It wasn’t loved by the judges. It’s sayonara, kemosabe.

Didn’t seem to have many decent singers. The judges were scrapping the bottom of the barrel. I think they’re gonna get desperate real soon.

There was a brief period when Roslan and Paul were arguing over underground rock. Are they going to come to blows? Come on, come on. No, they are not. Fuck.

Almost creamed in my pants when I heard Paul said later:
“I’m going soft in my old age….I’ll say yes.”

Muahahahahaha!!!
Don’t worry, Paul. Every male goes soft in their old age.
That’s the reason why Viagra was invented.

First post

I have posted several articles on Malaysian Idol in my other blog 'Stepping Aside for Reality'. For some mysterious reasons, search engines have been sending readers to my other blog for searches on 'Malaysian Idol'. It's not that I write a lot on that stuff. And it's all hidden among my various writings.

Thus I have decided to put up snippets on my Malaysian Idol articles here, with the appropriate links, so that readers will able able to find them easily, rather than search through my 'Stepping Aside for Reality' archive.

And yes, I am a fan of Malaysian Idol.
